Do You Want to Grow Your Business? Check Out This Strategy

Growing your business requires executing a thoughtfully orchestrated strategic plan, which will likely keep you busy with selling to more clients, selling more products to existing clients, creating more products, networking, and innovation. Yet, when you worked on your growth plan, did you take into account the one strategy that can make your revenue skyrocket?

Let me start with this picture: here I am in our garden, out in the Texas heat, standing next to our giant hollyhock. I did not plant it here. I planted hollyhocks elsewhere in the garden, but this one must have been blown over and planted itself right here, in between two flagstones, in a place we struggled with and didn’t quite know what to do with. But as soon as we spotted the hollyhock we watered it, fertilized it, and in no time it filled this space and offered an unexpected solution for this challenging corner of our garden. And now it grows and produces seeds for hundreds of new hollyhocks.

Why am I telling you this?

Because serendipity - the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way - reportedly played an important role in the growth of companies such as Apple, Nike, and Harley Davidson. Does it mean that we should abandon our carefully designed strategic plans? Absolutely not. And neither should we chase every shiny object that crosses our way.

Events that occur by chance will not turn into golden eggs by chance. It takes keen knowledge of your field to spot opportunities in the first place. And it takes even more knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurial determination to turn beneficial events into lasting successes.

If I did not know anything about gardening and did not recognize that the small plant in the strange place is a hollyhock, or if I rigidly cleaned the space between the two flagstones, we would have never had this giant plant and its hundreds seeds. And I did not abandon the rest of the garden because of this plant either. I just added it to the existing plans.

So, stick to your goals, execute your plans, do what you need to do, and at the same time keep your eyes open for unexpected opportunities. Make your strategic plan strong enough to keep you on target, and yet flexible enough to give you space to use serendipity to catapult your business to the next level.

Be you, be free, and the future is yours… starting NOW!
